African Player of the Year Award

Nominees of the 2010 Glo/CAF 201 Player of the Year Award.

The Confederation of African football (CAF) at the weekend revealed the last three nominees for the 2010 Glo/CAF 201 Player of the Year Award.

Those nominated are three times winner, Cameroonian, Samuel Eto'o Fills, two times winner, Didier Drogba of Cote d'Ivoire and new entrant, Asamoah Gyang of Ghana. The African Footballer of the Year award, presented to the best African football (soccer) player each year, has been conferred by the Confederation of African Football(CAF) since 1992.

CAF said the winner, who will be decided by the respective senior national teams' Head Coaches or Technical Director of the 53 National Associations affiliated to CA, would be known on December 20 in Cairo, Egypt.

The contenders, CAF said, were nominated by its Media Technical and Football Committees taking into consideration their performance during the year under review, January 2010 to November 2010.

The GLO- CAF Awards - Cairo 2010 to honor best achievers in African Football for the Year 2010 will be held on Monday, December 20 in Cairo, Egypt.

Didier Drogba

Didier Drogba

Drogba is a two-time winner and last claimed the honor in 2009. He won the English Premier League title with Chelsea last season, finishing as the league's top scorer with 29 goals in 32 games. Didier made his Ivory Coast debut in 2002, and captained his country to their first ever World Cup appearance in 2006, where he scored in a narrow defeat by Argentina which was followed by an equally-close reverse against Holland.

Samuel Eto'o

Samuel Eto'o

Eto'o of Cameroon, Africa's player of the year in 2003, 2004 and 2005, won an Italian league, cup and Champions League treble with Inter Milan in 2010.

Eto'o scored over 100 goals in five seasons with FC Barcelona, and is also the record holder in number of appearances by an African player in La Liga. In 2010, he became the first player to win two European Continental Trebles following his back-to-back achievements with Barcelona and Internazionale. He is the second player to have ever scored in two separate UEFA Champions League finals and the fourth player, after Marcel Desailly, Paulo Sousa and Gerard Piqué, to have won the UEFA Champions League two years in a row with different teams. He is also, as of 22 May 2010, the most decorated African player of all time. He is the first ever player to win two trebles back to back.

Asamoah Gyan
