African of the Week – Angélique Kidjo

Angélique Kidjo (born on July 14, 1960) is a Grammy Award–winning singer-songwriter and activist from Benin that is well known for her diverse musical influences and creative music videos.

She has been coined as the "Africa's first Diva" by Time magazine. She made the top 50 most iconic African figures' list (BBC) and has also been listed among the Top 100 Most Inspiring Women in the World. But wait, there is more: Kidjo is the first woman to be listed among "The 40 Most Powerful Celebrities In Africa" by Forbes magazine.

Angelique is the recipient of the 2015 Crystal Award given by the World Economic Forum of Davos in Switzerland. She was part of yesterday's Grammy Award, where she won her second Grammy for World Music album for "Eve," a tribute to the continent's women. The first Grammy award Kidjo previously won was for her 2007 album "Djin Djin."

Kidjo was born in Cotonou, Benin and speaks many languages: Fon, French, Yorùbá and English. She currently resides in New York.
