Morocco Edge Madagascar 3–2 to Claim Third CHAN Title
The Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi came alive on August 30, 2025, as Morocco and Madagascar delivered a CHAN final for the ages. The Atlas Lions, seasoned and determined, battled past a spirited Malagasy side to secure a 3–2 victory that confirmed Morocco as the first nation to lift three African Nations Championship (CHAN) trophies.
A Final Written in Drama
The match kicked off with a surprise twist. In just the ninth minute, Clavin Félicité Manohantsoa fired Madagascar into a 1–0 lead, sending the underdog fans into euphoria. It was the perfect start for the debutants, who had reached the final on the back of grit, passion, and their unforgettable 116th-minute semi-final winner against Sudan.
But Morocco’s pedigree quickly showed. By the 27th minute, Youssef Mehri equalized, demonstrating Morocco’s ability to stay calm under pressure. The momentum shifted, and just before halftime, Oussama Lamlioui made his presence felt, putting Morocco ahead 2–1 in the 44th minute after VAR confirmed the strike.
Madagascar’s Brave Fightback
Many expected Morocco to close out the game comfortably in the second half, but Madagascar had other ideas. At the 68th minute, Toky Niaina Rakotondraibe reignited Malagasy hopes with a stunning equalizer, leveling the score at 2–2 and turning the match into a rollercoaster.
The dream, however, was short-lived. Morocco’s talisman Oussama Lamlioui struck again in the 80th minute, completing his brace and delivering the decisive blow. His goal sealed the 3–2 win, cementing him as one of the standout stars of the tournament.
Legacy vs Dream
For Morocco, this victory was more than just another title. It etched their name deeper into CHAN history, adding 2024 to their previous triumphs in 2018 and 2020. The win underlined the nation’s strength in developing homegrown talent capable of competing at the highest level.
For Madagascar, this campaign was nothing short of historic. In their first-ever appearance in a continental final, the Malagasy squad displayed courage, tactical intelligence, and a refusal to bow to pressure. Their journey captured the hearts of millions and marked the beginning of what could be a bright future in African football.
Africa the Winner
Beyond the scoreline, the CHAN 2024 final reminded fans of the passion and unpredictability that makes African football so special. From the early shock to the late heroics, it was a night that showcased not just the skill of Morocco and Madagascar but also the growing depth of the game across the continent.
As Morocco lifted the trophy under the Nairobi night sky, Madagascar walked away with pride, knowing their story had inspired a continent. In many ways, both nations left the pitch as winners.
