Senegal win bronze after penalty drama in Kampala
The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) third‑place match delivered a thrilling finish. Senegal defeated Sudan 4–2 on penalties after a 1–1 draw at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala. The victory gives the Lions of Teranga a bronze medal for the second tournament in a row, highlighting Senegal’s growing pedigree in local‑based African football.
How the match unfolded
Sudan started brightly and went ahead after just six minutes. Mohamed Tia Asad rose highest to meet a corner from Abdel Raouf Yagoub, glancing his header past Senegalese goalkeeper Marc Diouf to make it 1–0. The Falcons of Jediane defended resolutely for the remainder of the first half, with Diouf keeping his side in the game through several key saves.
After the break, Senegal increased their tempo and pressed with greater intensity. The equaliser arrived in the 58th minute when winger Ousseynou Seck delivered a pinpoint cross for Seyni Ndiaye, who powered a header past Sudanese keeper Mohamed Abooja. Buoyed by the goal, the Lions of Teranga controlled possession, although Sudan remained dangerous on the counterattack.
Penalties decide the bronze medal
With no extra time in the third‑place match, the contest went straight to penalties. Sudan blinked first: Walieldin Khdir sent his opening effort wide, and later Musab Makeen saw his attempt saved by Marc Diouf. Senegal, by contrast, were flawless. Joseph Layssousse, Issa Kane, Vieux Cissé and Libasse Guèye all converted their spot‑kicks to seal a 4–2 shootout win and secure bronze for Senegal.
Respect for Sudan and a look ahead
Coach Souleymane Diallo praised his Senegalese side for bouncing back after a semifinal defeat to Morocco. Despite limited preparation due to a domestic football crisis, Sudan impressed under coach Kwesi Appiah, reaching the semifinals and eliminating heavyweights like Nigeria. Their spirited performance in Kampala earned admiration and proved that investment in home‑based talent can pay dividends.
With Senegal taking bronze and Sudan earning plaudits, attention now turns to the CHAN 2024 final between Morocco and Madagascar in Nairobi. For the Lions of Teranga, consecutive medals underscore the depth of Senegalese football. For Sudan, this tournament could serve as a springboard for future development — and for African football fans worldwide, CHAN 2024 has been a showcase of grit, technique and the pride of playing for home.
